To Flat Design Or Not To Flat Design

That is the question

I’ve been toying with the idea of another site redesign and some tweaking on my personal brand to make it more modern. The problem is that trendiness becomes obsolete so fast, but that would give me the opportunity to constantly reinvent myself (which admittedly I love doing) and I get to try out something new. Most of the clients at work aren’t looking for these super trendy sites, but the stuff I do in my free time allows me to achieve those things I can’t on the clock.

There is a huge divide about whether or not to do flat design. I, personally, love anything fresh and new. And this is shifting the design world as we see it, whether or not we agree with implementing flat design, it is easily where design is headed for the next year or two especially with the recent release of IOS 7. Time will tell whether it’s too trendy to stick around, but I’m interested to hear other people’s thoughts on flat design.

In the meantime, here are some samples of my favorite uses of flat design.

Rdio

I love Rdio’s design. I’m debating on whether or not I will stick with Pandora, but the design is a big contributing factor to wanting to switch. I love what they do with the background. I am going to try and see if I can do that with some portfolio items. The blurred background is so cool and the fact that it’s the album cover just makes it even cooler. I could go on and on.

Enjoy Illinois

Not 100% flat/trendy, but it definitely has a lot of flat design elements and thats super rare to find in tourism websites which are usually highly textured. I believe this site launched in the past few months (as I’ve kept a close eye on it while building Experience Mississippi River), and I am just in love with everything about this. The fact that I work in tourism industry makes it highly relevant to any upcoming designs.

Fitbit

I love the colors on this site. Can anyone tell why? Heh, pretty close to the ones I have here, but not quite. A lot more mod-y. And the product is pretty neat too! Been thinking about buying one of these things, but then I might be depressed that the stats reflect my sitting at the computer and working. Dangerous.
